However, new analysis has raised an important question: will data centres create as many permanent jobs as the technology sector predicts?
The Guardian reported that research by the environmental thinktank Verdant estimates planned UK data centres could generate approximately 10,400 additional permanent jobs. This is only around a quarter of the more than 40,000 new roles forecast by technology industry body techUK.
The competing estimates have triggered a wider debate about how employment figures are calculated, what types of jobs data centres genuinely create and where the best career opportunities in the digital economy may be found.
Why Are the Employment Estimates So Different?
The biggest issue is that different reports do not always count jobs in the same way.
A large data centre can support thousands of workers while it is being built. Construction requires engineers, electricians, planners, contractors and many other specialists. These are genuine and valuable roles, but most are temporary and reduce significantly once the facility becomes operational.
Long-term operational teams are generally much smaller because modern data centres are highly automated. Permanent positions may include:
- Data centre technicians
- Network and infrastructure engineers
- Cybersecurity specialists
- Cloud engineers
- Facilities and electrical engineers
- Security and maintenance staff
- Operations managers
Industry estimates can also include indirect and supply-chain employment, while lower estimates may count only people working directly at operational sites. This helps explain why two organisations can examine the same sector and produce very different headline figures.
What Does the Supporting Evidence Show?
Verdant’s analysis reportedly examined 20 proposed developments alongside employment information from existing facilities. It estimated that established UK data centres support approximately 8.6 direct jobs for every megawatt of power capacity, compared with a much higher figure used in techUK’s projections. Verdant also argued that some of the largest planned sites could create as few as 1.6 permanent jobs per megawatt.
Other UK evidence supports the broader concern that operational employment can be limited. Research published by the Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland found that most data centres it examined employed between 20 and 50 people directly once operational, despite supporting substantially more jobs during construction.
An Oxford Economics assessment of a proposed London data-centre campus also demonstrates why the distinction matters. It forecast thousands of jobs during a five-year construction period, but expressed these as “job years”—a measure of employment supported for one year—rather than an equal number of permanent positions.
The House of Commons Library has explained that data centres do not have their own industrial classification, making their direct economic and employment contribution difficult to identify precisely. Headline numbers should therefore be read alongside the methodology used to produce them.
The Industry’s Counterargument
The findings are disputed by techUK, which argues that data centres make a much wider contribution to employment and the economy.
Its Foundations for the Future report says the sector supports skilled, stable and well-paid employment, as well as jobs across construction, energy, telecommunications, professional services and supply chains.
This means it would be misleading to suggest that data centres have little economic value simply because they employ relatively small teams on site. They provide the infrastructure behind cloud services, digital payments, online businesses, public services and increasingly AI. They can also support business investment and productivity far beyond the physical location of the facility.
The crucial point is that direct permanent jobs, temporary construction work and employment supported across the wider economy are different measures. They should not be combined without a clear explanation.
Fewer On-Site Jobs Does Not Mean Fewer Technology Careers
While an individual data centre may not employ thousands of people permanently, the services running through it support an enormous technology ecosystem.
Organisations still need skilled people to configure cloud platforms, protect networks, analyse data, manage identities, monitor security incidents and develop AI solutions. Many of these professionals will never work inside a data centre, but their roles depend upon the infrastructure that data centres provide.
This is where the strongest long-term career opportunities may exist. Instead of focusing only on the number of employees physically working at a facility, jobseekers should consider the expanding range of roles enabled by cloud and data-centre infrastructure, including:
- Cloud support and cloud engineering
- Cybersecurity and security operations
- Network engineering
- Data analysis and data engineering
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Infrastructure automation and DevOps
- Governance, compliance and risk management
These skills are transferable between employers and industries, which can give learners a broader and more resilient career path than training for a single site or narrowly defined position.
What Does This Mean for Someone Starting an IT Career?
The latest debate is not evidence that people should avoid careers connected with data centres. It shows why candidates need to understand where employment demand is actually being created.
Building a strong foundation in networking, cloud computing and cybersecurity can open opportunities with managed service providers, cloud partners, consultancies, public-sector organisations and businesses undergoing digital transformation—not only with data-centre operators.
Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, networking, cybersecurity, data and AI skills are all relevant to the wider digital infrastructure market. Practical experience is equally important. Employers increasingly want candidates who can demonstrate that they understand real systems, not simply list qualifications on a CV.
A More Honest Way to Discuss Data-Centre Jobs
Data centres are strategically important to the UK and will create employment, but the public deserves clarity about the type and duration of those jobs.
Announcements should distinguish between:
- Temporary construction employment
- Permanent jobs based at the facility
- Indirect jobs in suppliers and local services
- Wider technology roles enabled by the infrastructure
This would allow local communities, policymakers and prospective workers to judge proposed developments using realistic information.
The claim that planned facilities may produce only 25% of the jobs predicted by the industry remains contested. Nevertheless, the underlying evidence gives good reason to examine headline employment promises carefully—particularly when large developments also require substantial amounts of land, electricity and water.
